John Carroll went 5-3 on their spring trip. Tom Hickey and Brian Benander were the leading hitters. The Blue Streaks are young using many freshman pitchers. It will be interesting to see how they progress as the season goes on. Agreed. I looked at their roster and wondered who the heck was going to start after Evanko. But I'm well beyond doubting that the Streaks will find a way to be in the hunt for the OAC tourney. They find a way every year it seems.

Between Berg and Etta it could be long year for OAC hitters. Their pitching somehow seems better than expected. And that's saying a lot.

Defiance had a freshman go all 9 yesterday against ONU? Wow, impressive. DC won 3-1 so I'm guessing his pitch count was low, but still...

This is n longer a spring trip discusion, but I'll put it in anyway. Wittenberg opened it's Northern part of their schedule last night vs. D1 Dayton and put up at fight against Dayton bolwing a 8-5 lead in in 6th. Dayton tied it up at 8 in the 8th, then pulled away. The Tigers out hit the Flyers 10-9 but also posted 3 errors, which hurt! Witt has their 1st home game this Sat. vs Mount Union in a DH starting at 1pm. Then Travel to Trine on Sunday for a DH also st 1pm.

I haven't been on in awhile but in regards to Mount Union's now 2-8 record. I have seen the start (not in person but online) and the only way I can see a positive in a 2-8 start is that they finally started over. It is clear they are playing a bunch of freshman but they may also be the best player at that position right now. Maybe it is a build towards the future and instead of being around .500 year after year after year but we wont know that until down the road. However, given the consistency of mediocrity in the past perhaps Mr. Kerhres will no longer be so patient with Hesse given that programs such as Women's BBall, VBall and Track & Field have also had postseason success.
Who know's... just some thoughts
Hopefully my work schedule will allow me to get to some games this season
Happy Posting

^^^ Agreed. They've been playing 4 freshmen in the field and 2 of their 4 guys in the rotation are freshmen. That's a lot of youth. And you're right, only time will tell if it pays off. The Lee Hood resignation certainly raised some eyebrows though.

Chad, the Defiance pitcher ended up with 125+ pitches. I thought he'd be done after the sixth, when he had 90+. But hey, he obviously finished it out well.
ONU's been throwing the ball really well (3.25 ERA), but they hadn't been able to get the clutch hits in until a comeback win over a not-so-talented Albion (Mich.) team. Against Defiance, ONU had the bases loaded and nobody out in the sixth or seventh, and a foulout and double play ended that rally pretty quickly.
I don't expect the offense to be stellar, but I think it'll get into more of a groove than it's in now. Coach Bergman has really moved over to the small ball offense...maybe a little too much. Decided to put on a sac bunt in bottom of the ninth, down two runs, leadoff man on base and nobody out.
Anyway, I'm not sure this team will win 25+ games again, but I could see it snagging one of the two OAC Tourney bids that look like they'll be completely up for grabs.

Thanks for the info, pb. 125+ is a lot this early in the season, IMO. Especially a young kid. When I coached I was probably over protective of my guys' arms just because no one was like that with me as a player and I paid the price. I'm certainly no head coach, but no way I have a freshman throwing that many pitches in March in a non-conference game.
As for your Bears, they may not need a huge offense to make the OAC tourney. As you said, it's wide open. If they keep pitching the way they are they'll be right there. B-W won today to get over .500 so I still don't know if anyone is entirely sure what they have going on. And it's easy to forget about Ott since they're on qtrs and they always start later than the rest.
